“Resurgences”
The 2018 ICOMOS Canada Annual Meeting, Montreal, May 23-26, 2018.
Our hosts included the Université de Montréal‘s Faculté de l’Aménagement, the City of Montreal’s Opération Patrimoine, the Art Mûr Gallery, the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, the Canadian Guild of Crafts and Les Amis de la Montagne.
The Meeting’s theme, Resurgences, explored the re-emegence of Indigenious heritage and culture within our cities, where most traces of early Native presence have been concealed. Concurrently, our urban environments are being re-assessed through the lenses of landscape and ecosystemic theories. Nature is coming back to the surface of our paved cities. These resurgences are at the forefront of how we view the future of Canadian cultural heritage, and were the focus of the 2018 workshops, discussions and visits. During the four-day event, other key topics were explored such as the conservation and management of Canadian World Heritage Sites, heritage landscapes, and sustainable development goals.
The main activities consisted in a series of technical discussions led by some of our members or guest speakers. Several other events were held at the conference, such as an opening event, round table discussion, exhibition tours and a dinner event promoting exchanges and initiatives with the ICOMOS International Scientific Committees. The final day featured the Annual General Assembly, as well as tours organized by our partner event, Opération Patrimoine.

“Connection to Place”
The 2017 ICOMOS Canada Annual Meeting, Halifax, May 24-27, 2017.
Our hosts included Dalhousie University’s Faculty of Architecture and Planning, the Nova Scotia College of Art & Design and the Halifax Central Library. The 2017 Annual Meeting theme, Connection to Place, explored the relationship between people and place to understand its influence in defining and conserving places of cultural significance.
The primary focus of the meeting was a series of Technical Discussions facilitated by some of our own members. These providd opportunities to discuss key topics including the conservation of World Heritage Sites, cultural landscapes, Indigenous heritage, the nature-culture journey, sustainable development and the Habitat III urban agenda.The final day featured our Annual General Assembly. The Opening Event, held at NSCAD’s Anna Leonowens Gallery and Art Bar on May 24th, featured three art exhibits related to the theme, a keynote speaker and the launch of the Jacques Dalibard Award.
On May 28, a Post-Event Tour gave the opportunity to discover one of the gems of Nova Scotia: the World Heritage Site of Grand Pré.
The Annual Meeting included several Public Activities. Exhibits of original works commissioned for this event were on display at NSCAD throughout the week. The Halifax Central Library hosted three days of activities from May 25th to 27th, including a Panel Discussion moderated by the CBC and featuring guests from Canada and abroad.

“Heritage and Democracy : Bringing Heritage out of History and into the City”
The 2016 ICOMOS Canada Symposium, Toronto, May 5-7, 2016.
On Thursday, May 5th, the Toronto The Good 2016 Party, organized by E.R.A. Architects at the Distillery District, celebrated the anniversary of Jane Jacobs’ 100th birthday (May 4th) and the launch of the Jane’s Walk festival (May 6th – May8th).
May 6th’s day-long event was planned around integrating ICOMOS Canada into the Jane’s Walks events – a chance for people to meet and share ideas. Tours and workshops were held to discuss new ways of viewing and integrating heritage in our everyday lives.
May 7th’s morning session was decicated to lectures on the impact of climate change and on the evolution of national parks. The Annual General Meeting was held in the afternooon.
