Message from ICOMOS Canada President on Ukraine

Dear colleagues,

ICOMOS Canada unreservedly supports the position of ICOMOS. Additionally, Canada being home to one of the largest Ukrainian diasporas and with strong historical connections, our national committee is actively engaged in our international network to be ready to provide support for the identification, recording, and protection of cultural heritage as it is affected by the conflict. Furthermore, we rely on that network to provide reliable information about the situation on the ground in order to communicate it to Canadian audiences, when possible.

One immediate action that we are taking is to organize an event to raise awareness about the richness of Ukrainian heritage and to put a spotlight on the destruction of cultural heritage in times of conflict as an attack on human rights, indeed a crime against humanity. Together with the Canadian Human Rights Museum, ICOM Canada, the Ukrainian Museum of Canada, and other partners, we will be preparing a series of panel discussions and educational pieces in the coming weeks that will bring together legal and heritage experts from Canada and abroad. Please follow our social media and our website for additional information.

I invite you to contact the ICOMOS Canada Secretariat with comments, ideas, information, and any relevant action that you would like to bring the Board’s attention to.

I thank you for your support,

Christophe Rivet
President
