ICOMOS Canada brings together professionals from across Canada from such disciplines as architecture/landscape architecture, archaeology, planning, engineering, anthropology, art history, geography, and other related disciplines to develop and discuss the theory and application of best practices to the conservation of buildings, landscapes, sites, and places. Whether you are a seasoned professional, a student, an emerging practitioner, or someone who lives your cultural heritage, there is a place for your knowledge and your ideas in our organization.

ICOMOS Canada memberships are valid from January 1 to December 31 of the year in which you join. However, membership applications received on or after October 1 will be applied for the following year. Membership renewals for the following year are possible beginning October 1.

Membership fees support both ICOMOS Canada and the ICOMOS International Secretariat, to which a portion of membership fees are returned. All membership categories offer a discount at paid events.

Membership Benefits

Joining ICOMOS Canada means supporting the protection and conservation of cultural heritage in Canada and around the world. It is also an opportunity to join a multidisciplinary international network of heritage professionals and experts, where you can share your knowledge and exchange with other heritage professionals. As a member you will be able to take part in:

  • activities, events and training courses organized by ICOMOS and ICOMOS Canada free of charge or at a preferential rate
  • take part in national discussions on national, provincial/territorial and local legislative and policy frameworks, the place of heritage in Canadian society, and the training and employment of emerging and young professionals

As a professional, you will also be able to: 

  • participate in ICOMOS international scientific committees
  • contribute to the support of governmental or non-governmental organizations, and to evaluation missions or the production of reports on the state of conservation of heritage sites
  • contribute to the training and mentoring of young and emerging professionals, to ensure the future of Canadian heritage expertise

Membership Category Details

Individual Professional (175$/year)

Individuals with experience in the field of heritage conservation and management who currently practice or are recently retired as:

  • a member of the scientific, technical or administrative staff of a national, federal, provincial, territorial, Indigenous, municipal, or regional agency / organization with responsibilities for heritage
  • a decision-maker or a specialist (e.g., conservator, Elder, interpreter) engaged in the conservation, restoration, rehabilitation and enhancement of cultural heritage
  • Indigenous Elders and Knowledge Keepers, an academic, instructor/teacher engaged in researching or teaching subjects related to the conservation, restoration, rehabilitation and enhancement of heritage conservation and management

Retired Professional (120$/year)

Individuals with expertise in the field of heritage conservation who practice and have retired as:

  • a member of the scientific, technical or administrative staff of a national, federal, provincial, territorial, aboriginal, municipal or regional organization with heritage responsibilities
  • decision-maker or specialist (e.g. conservator, Elder, interpreter) involved in the conservation, restoration, rehabilitation and presentation of cultural heritage
  • instructor, university professor or teacher involved in the study or teaching of subjects related to the conservation, restoration, rehabilitation and enhancement of cultural heritage

Emerging Professionals (80$/year)

Emerging professionals are professionals aged 30 and over who are beginning their careers in heritage as:

  • a member of the scientific, technical or administrative staff of a national, regional, Indigenous, municipal, or regional organization/agency with responsibilities for heritage
  • a decision-maker or a specialist (eg. conservator, Elder, interpreter) engaged in the conservation, restoration, rehabilitation and enhancement of cultural heritage
  • an academic, instructor, teacher, or Indigenous Knowledge Keeper engaged in studying or teaching subjects related to heritage conservation and management

This category also applies to students aged 30 and over who are currently enrolled in:

  • a Canadian or foreign post-secondary institution; and,
  • a program or set of courses related to heritage conservation and management

**Please note this category of member can only be selected for a maximum of 5 consecutive years.

Young professionals (50$/year)

Young professionals must be under 30 years of age and begin their career as:

  • a member of the scientific, technical or administrative staff of a national, federal, provincial, territorial, aboriginal or regional organization with heritage responsibilities
  • decision-maker or specialist (e.g. conservator, Elder, interpreter) involved in the conservation, restoration, rehabilitation and presentation of cultural heritage
  • instructor, university professor or teacher involved in the study or teaching of subjects related to the conservation, restoration, rehabilitation and enhancement of cultural heritage

This category also applies to students under the age of 30 who are currently enrolled in:

  • a Canadian or foreign post-secondary institution; and,
  • A program or set of courses related to heritage conservation and management

Affiliate (120$/year)

Individuals who would like to support the objectives and activities of ICOMOS Canada or who wish to contribute to activities in the field of cultural heritage conservation. This category is particularly aimed at those who wish to stay informed about the work of ICOMOS, attend events and contribute to discussions.

Institutional Memberships

For institutions, municipalities, and organizations interested in supporting the mandate of ICOMOS Canada, contributing to its work, and having access to its network of experts.

Institutional Member – $700/year: For any institution. Institutional members receive a 10% discount on events and workshops.

Institutional Plus – $1500/year: For institutions that believe in the work and mission of ICOMOS Canada and want to support its activities. They receive a special listing in our Annual Report and on our website. They get an International Institutional Membership and can designate up to 5 professional members. Institutional Plus members receive a 15% discount on events and workshops.

Institutional Platinum – $2,500/year: For institutions that believe in the work and mission of ICOMOS Canada and want to support its activities. They receive a special listing in our Annual Report and on our website. They get an International Institutional Membership, and can designate up to 8 professional members. Institutional Platinum members receive a 25% discount on events and workshops.
