The Historic Sites and Monuments Board of Canada: Call for Candidates

ICOMOS Canada would like to invite their members to consider heeding the call for applications for the Historic Sites and Monuments Board of Canada.

The Government of Canada is looking for candidates interested in serving as the Newfoundland and Labrador, Prince Edward Island, Nova Scotia, Quebec, and Nunavut representatives on the Historic Sites and Monuments Board of Canada (HSMBC).

The HSMBC is responsible to provide advice to the Minister on the designation of places, persons, and events of national historic significance.  The HSMBC is composed of a representative from each province and territory, as well as the Librarian and Archivist of Canada, an officer of the Canadian Museum of History, and an officer of the Parks Canada Agency.

Requirements

Candidates should:

  • Reside in the Province or Territory they represent
  • Be prepared to participate in at least two meetings a year where the HSMBC reviews new national historic persons, places, and events suggested by public nomination
  • Have knowledge of cultural practices that shape the province or territory he represents through experience or education related to the conservation or commemoration of Canada’s cultural heritage (e.g. being a knowledge keeper within your community)
  • Be prepared to take on this role for up to five years for which you will receive an honorarium based on days worked.
