2024 Elections – Candidate Profiles

ICOMOS Canada’s board elections are now live! ICOMOS Canada is looking to fill 5 vacancies on the board, and received 2 qualifying applications. Members may vote to affirm the candidates, who’s profiles can be found in this post with candidate statements are linked.

All current members should have now received voting information for the current ICOMOS Canada Board of Directors nominations. As per section 41 and 49 of the Bylaws, Directors shall be elected by electronic ballot of the Members.

Results of the election will be announced and ratified at our General Meeting which will take place over Zoom on November 13th, 2024 at 1:00 PM EST both online and in person in Montreal. Elected Directors take office at the close of the meeting.

Candidate Profiles

Laurent Genereux

I have been an architect in Quebec since 2021 and a member of ICOMOS Canada since 2019. I joined the committee of emerging professionals of ICOMOS Canada, of which I have been president since 2024.
In 2018, I obtained a master’s degree in architecture and urban design from Laval University. In 2018-2019, I completed a one-year internship in Paris where I worked on renovation projects for old buildings. From 2019 to 2024, I worked with architect Marie-Josée Deschênes on restoration and adaptive reuse projects of heritage buildings. I have assessed the condition and written the technical audit of more than a 100 heritage buildings, notably regional cultural and museum institutions and in particular heritage buildings of a religious nature. As an architect specializing in heritage, I have developed solutions with non-profit organizations adapted to their reality. I believe that heritage preservation must be democratic and reflect the diversity of regions, social groups and historical points of view. I am particularly interested in vernacular heritage, cultural landscapes and historic urban centres. I am also a member of the Vernacular Architecture Forum (VAF), where I presented a conference in 2022 and 2024, and the International Association for Preservation and Technology (APT).
In 2021, I participated in the U.S. ICOMOS International Exchange Program at the San Antonio Missions National Historical Park. In 2023, I was selected for the Young Professionals Forum and attended the ICOMOS General Assembly in Sydney. I have been working at DFS inc in Montreal since 2024.

Miquel Reina Oritz

Miquel Reina Ortiz (Montréal, Québec). Assistant Professor in the School of Architecture of the Faculty of Environmental Design at the Université de Montréal and responsible for the master and the microprogram program in conservation. PhD in Architecture, Carleton University. Architect and Master in Restoration and Rehabilitation, Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya. ICOMOS CANADA EPWG Representative from 2020 to 2023. ICOMOS EPWG Scientific Project Coordinator from 2021 to 2023. ICOMOS ISC CIVVIH Board member since 2024.
Miquel Reina Ortiz (Montréal, Québec) is an Assistant Professor in the School of Architecture of the Faculty of Environmental Design at the Université de Montréal, where he is responsible for the master and microprogram in conservation. He holds a Ph.D. in architecture from the Azrieli School of Architecture and Urbanism at Carleton University. His research concerns the relationship between different scales of intervention in the urban conservation of the historic city. He has developed his expertise in heritage documentation with research projects on World Heritage Sites and the generation of new digital workflows applied to the field of heritage conservation. He is currently an expert and a board member of the ICOMOS International Scientific Committee on Historic Cities, Towns and Villages (CIVVIH). He has also served as ICOMOS CANADA EPWG Representative from 2020 to 2023 and ICOMOS EPWG Scientific Project Coordinator from 2021 to 2023. He graduated with honours in architecture and completed a Master of Science in restoration and rehabilitation from the ETSAB Barcelona School of Architecture at the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya. His professional architectural experience focuses on adaptive reuse projects, public space, housing, interiors and competitions.
